West Berkshire & North Hants Primary Schools
Cross Country Championships 2014
On a Warm Sunny day the 15th running of the West Berkshire & North Hampshire Primary Schools Cross Country took place at Newbury Showground, 40 schools making up 950 athletes on the day which was organised by Team Kennet Athletic & Triathlon Club.
This event is the biggest in the UK, and thanks to the main sponsors Porterfield who supplied all the finishers with medals this year.
In race 1 the year 3 / 4 Girls Louise Kane broke away to win representing Stockcross School, with a battle behind saw Molly Leach (Brightwalton) take second and Josie Robertson (Cold Ash) taking third. In the Team race Francis Baily just edged out St. Gabriels for the winning team.
Race 2 Tom Denning took a convincing win for his school Whitchurch, Wilf Waldow coming second for Hungerford and third place was Jimmy Sherlock (Kingsclere). The team prize went to Speenhamland School. This was the biggest field of the day with 258 finishers.
Race 3 was a close race with three girls pulling away, but the strength of Anna Pettit from Thorngrove saw her take the honours, with Lucy Wells finishing strong from Falkland and Phoebe Hoaen not far behind in third from Chieveley. The team prize went Thorngrove School.
Race 4 saw Marcus Chitty run from the front to control the race, the only athlete from Burghclere Primary. Rory Mitchell from Thorngrove took second with Charlie Wiggett from Falkland taking third, and it was Falkland that took the team award.
The most improved school from last year was Birchcopse, with the best small school going to Basildon.
Thorngrove School took the first Hampshire School with Woolton Hill runners up and in the Main competition Falkand School managed to hold onto their performance from last year to win again, they actually took the B team award as well, Thorngrove came second overall with Hungerford coming third.
Race Organiser and Club Chairman Nick Bull who helped set up the Athletic club at Team Kennet would like to thank all his team for their hard work and all the parents/chilldren for taking part, a special thanks to Park House and The Downs Schools for bringing Young Leaders on the day to gain work experience.

Feedback
Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon – made all the better for that glorious weather.
The coned area for runners and teachers at the end of the funnel was excellent and much less stressful as we were able to collect all children happily, and the introduction of medals for all was a super idea for which we thanked the sponsor. It is quite something for the children to run that distance and a medal makes it all seem good – a great incentive to keep going!
The numbers were amazing again and the standard seems to get better and better. The times run by the first few home were phenomenal.
Thank you again and to all your helpers. See you in June
