Team Kennet organised the annual Porterfield West Berkshire & North Hampshire Primary Schools Cross Country Championships now in its 20th year at Newbury Show Ground, breaking all its own records, most important one was taking the event to UKs Biggest Primary Cross Country event with 1251 finishers from 50 schools.
Race 1 sponsored by MIKS Paints saw the Year 3 / 4 Girls saw a fast start with just under 300 girls cover the 1 mile route. Bethany McLean from Falkland school led from the start, she controlled the race through out to storm to victory ahead of Louise Colby from Robert Sandilands trying so hard to close the gap. But kept her distance to fend off Leilah Gaye from Spurcroft who took third place. The team Trophy went to Spurcroft School, the first time they have won this, with Falkland taking runners up and St. Gabriel’s taking third place team with same points.
Race 2 sponsored by The Briars Dental Surgery saw the year 3 / 4 Boys contest a great sprint finish as first 3 boys were very close. Eddie Rushover from Hungerford came across the line first, with Kenechi Akosa from Falkland taking second and Arthur Thatcher from Hungerford third place. In the team awards, it was Hungerford taking the prize, the first time they have won this trophy, Falkland taking runners up and Francis Baily taking third place. Just over 300 finished this race
Race 3 sponsored by Edit Photographers saw the year 5 / 6 Girls set another fast race. Kirsten Fraser from Cold Ash St. Marks taking a fantastic win ahead of Helena Van Blerk from Falkland and Rubi Maleham from St. Gabriels. The team prize went to Falkland by just 1 point from last years winners Whitchurch and Thorngrove taking third place. Just under 300 finished this race
Race 4 sponsored by Porterfield Public Relations saw the year 5 / 6 Boys making sure they produced the fastest race of the day. A good battle up front eventually saw Jacob Woods from St. Nicolas School come home first in the biggest field ever of 351 finishers, with Charlie Adams from Brockhurst School taking second and Flynn Fox-Jones Falkland School coming third right on the line. The team award went to Falkland with Thatcham Park taking second place and Brightwalton taking Third.
Overall it was Falkland again taking the Overall Winners spot, with Francis Baily coming Runners Up and Thorngrove taking third. Top Hampshire Trophy went to Thorngrove with Woolton Hill taking runners Up and Kingsclere third. Small Schools Trophy went to Streatley, ahead of Stockcross with Cold Ash t. Marks in Third place. Most Improved school went to Hungerford Primary. The B team Trophy went to Francis Baily
Team Kennet Club Chairman Nick Bull who has been running the event for 20 years would like to thank all the Sponsors for making the event the biggest ever and most successful, to all the Children who came and had a fantastic afternoon of running and going home with a medal of achievement, the weather looked like it was going to beat us on Monday morning but as the weather showed signs of improving fast it was decided to go ahead, and it was a great decision enjoyed by everyone.
